A Strategic Move to Modernise Renewable Infrastructure
Tamil Nadu, a pioneer in wind energy, has launched a significant initiative to repower ageing windmills and convert them into high-efficiency solar–wind hybrid systems. TANGEDCO and the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd. (TNGECL) have officially opened bids for this hybrid redevelopment programme, aimed at maximising the potential of wind-rich regions that currently host outdated turbines.
Many early-generation windmills installed in the 1990s and early 2000s operate at low capacities and produce limited output. By integrating them with modern wind turbines and solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, the state aims to improve efficiency, increase power generation, and ensure better utilisation of available land.
Project Cost and VisionTNGECL’s internal study estimates the project cost to be around ₹200 crore. Despite the high investment, the hybrid model promises long-term benefits, including enhanced plant load factors, improved grid stability, and higher renewable energy output. Modern wind turbines, combined with solar plants, offer better performance consistency throughout the year and reduce dependence on a single source of energy.
Why the Hybrid Approach MattersRepowering is crucial for Tamil Nadu as a significant share of its 9,500+ MW wind capacity comes from older turbines with low hub heights and limited efficiency. The new hybrid systems can generate substantially more power—often up to twice the output—while occupying the same land area. This approach also aligns with India’s broader clean energy targets and supports Tamil Nadu’s goal of strengthening its renewable energy leadership.
A Boost for Developers and the State’s Energy FutureThe project has already drawn attention from developers and investors due to its strong long-term potential. With bids now open, Tamil Nadu is set to transform obsolete wind farms into modern hybrid power hubs—reinforcing the state’s commitment to sustainable growth and reliable green energy for the future.
