A new report by We Naturalists reveals a 48% increase in
green job demand year-on-year. Gen Z (ages 21–30) is leading the trend, making
up 63% of applicants, showing a strong interest in careers related to
sustainability and the environment.
Why Is This
Happening?
- Fast growth in green
sectors like solar energy, electric vehicles (EVs), sustainability
consulting, ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) analysis, waste
management, hydrogen energy, green buildings, and climate data science.
- More people from smaller
cities are joining the movement. Tier 2 and 3 cities now make up 35% of
green job seekers, up from 25% three years ago. Cities like Coimbatore,
Kochi, Jaipur, Indore, Ranchi, and Bhubaneswar are seeing major growth.
Sector Outlook & Job Projections:
- India could generate
7.29 million green jobs by FY2028, and 35 million by 2047, supporting a
goal of building a $1 trillion green economy by 2030, and $15 trillion by
2070.
- 20% of India’s current
workforce is already in green jobs. This is expected to double by 2030.
- Roles like ESG
analysts, climate data experts, and green tech professionals are seeing
4–6× increase in demand every year.
City vs Smaller Town Trends:
- Metro cities (Mumbai,
Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Chennai, Hyderabad) still lead in job postings.
- But Tier 2 and 3
cities are catching up, expected to contribute up to 40% of new green jobs
by FY2028. Coimbatore is emerging as a major hub.
Skills in Demand:
- Green jobs need both
sustainability knowledge and tech skills—especially in AI, IoT, GIS,
blockchain, and climate analytics.
- Job platforms report a
64% increase in monthly green job postings.
- Top roles:
Sustainability Managers, ESG Analysts, Environmental Consultants, and
Safety Specialists.
- However, there’s a
skills gap, especially in solar, wind, battery manufacturing, and EHS
(Environment, Health & Safety) areas.
Future:
- Gen Z is driving
change, and smaller cities are becoming key players.
- Partnerships between
industry and educational institutions are crucial to train people for
these jobs.
- Reskilling and
inclusive hiring, especially in smaller towns and for women, can help
India fully benefit from the green transition.
Wrapping Up:
India’s green job market is growing fast and spreading
wide. With Gen Z leading the way, and more jobs moving to smaller cities, the
country is building a sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready workforce. All
it needs now is the right training, support, and collaboration to unlock its
full potential.
