MNRE Launches Circularity Challenge in Renewable Tech

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced a call for proposals under the Innovation Challenge for Circularity in Renewable Energy Technologies – Batteries and Solar Photovoltaic, as part of the Renewable Energy Research and Technology Development (RE-RTD) programme.

Objective of the Challenge

This initiative aims to:

  • Promote research and development in circular economy approaches within the solar and battery sectors.
  • Minimise waste, enhance sustainability, and strengthen supply chains.
  • Support India’s commitment to global climate goals and sustainable development.

Focus Areas

The proposals must align with one or more of the following themes:

  • Design and Manufacturing Innovations: Innovations for circular design, resource efficiency, use of alternative materials, and easy dismantling.
  • Second-Life Use and Recycling Innovations: Solutions promoting reuse, repair, refurbishment, and recycling of solar panels and batteries.
  • Operational Management Innovations: Innovations to extend the life of solar and battery systems, including predictive maintenance and digital labelling.

Application Timeline

  • Opening Date: June 23, 2025
  • Closing Date: July 15, 2025

Eligibility

  • All applicants and their technologies must be fully India-based.
  • Proposals must comply with RE-RTD guidelines and meet all regulatory requirements.
  • Eligible participants include Indian companies, startups, and research organisations.

Proposal Evaluation

Proposals will be judged on:

  • Relevance to circular economy goals
  • Technical innovation and scalability
  • Commercial viability and sustainability
  • Adherence to submission guidelines

Project Monitoring and Reporting

  • Selected projects will be monitored by MNRE-empanelled Project Monitoring Committees (PMCs).
  • Periodic technical and financial reports must be submitted.
  • MNRE reserves the right to discontinue support if satisfactory progress is not made.
