India’s Wind Energy Capacity Grows to 51.5 GW

India’s wind energy capacity has increased by over 10.5%, reaching 51.5 GW compared to 46.42 GW last year. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, shared the update on social media during Global Wind Day.

 

In a post on the social media platform X, the minister said on the occasion of GW capacity and rising, "we are moving towards an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, powered by innovation, green technology and sustainable progress".

 

India’s renewable energy sector is growing fast. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country is making strong progress in clean energy like solar and wind.

According to government data:

·        Total renewable energy capacity grew 17.13%, reaching 226.74 GW in May 2025 (up from 193.58 GW last year).

·        Solar energy saw the biggest rise, growing 31.49% to 110.83 GW.

India’s solar power has increased a lot over the years—from just 2.82 GW in 2014 to over 110 GW now.

State Contributions:

·        Gujarat leads with ~12.7?GW installed (up ~8% since March 2024)

·        Tamil Nadu follows with ~11.7?GW (~10.7% growth).

·        Karnataka added ~1.33?GW in FY?2024–25, reaching ~7.35?GW total

Global Rank:

India now stands as the fourth-largest wind power market and the third-largest renewable energy producer worldwide

 

 

Policy & Ambitions:

·        PM?Modi’s 2030 goal aims for 100?GW of total wind capacity (including 30?GW offshore), supported by viability gap funding and strong manufacturing ecosystem
